The most effective way to put your marketing on autopilot is through email marketing. Once you build your lists, if you build them effectively, then all you have to do is send an email to your readers and make the sale.

Giveaways are the easiest way to build a list. It allows you to use the leverage of many different people to drive traffic to your list.

Forums, like some of these other techniques is rather old, but it’s still effective. Forums allow you to build relationships with others.

And ‘Just-In-Time’ supply systems, the darling of the 80’s and 90’s with it’s reduced inventories, has become a major headache. With no existing inventory to fall back on, corporations are finding it necessary to prop up their suppliers or face a lack of product while they search for new sources.
Business-to-Consumer business is just as bad, if not worse. Millions of jobs have evaporated in the past year alone, taking those salaries with them. Falling home values in the US and UK, for example, have dried up many equity lines of credit, and the general credit squeeze is making it even tougher to ride out the storm on credit. Credit card companies are lowering limits and/or raising the interest rates for those already struggling, exacerbating the situation even more.
And even families with no job losses or income reduction are realizing that savings are at all-time lows while household debt is reaching record heights. So again spending is curtailed in an attempt to pay down debt and rebuild a financial cushion against the unexpected.
Yet Internet marketing and its subsets – affiliate marketing and niche marketing – continue to thrive and even boom during it all. If you’ve been considering getting into Internet marketing but have hesitated because of the recession, it’s time for a major reframe of your viewpoint…
Let’s start with the headspace of people using the Internet in general. In tough economic times people don’t head out to the mall as often – because the mall is a place to shop and spend money. But the main reason people go online is for information, so that psychological barrier isn’t there. While they’re still willing to spend SOME money, they just aren’t heading out LOOKING to spend it.
Second, no market is expanding, or has ever expanded, at the pace the Internet community is growing today. Every single day tens or hundreds of thousands of new people come online, and some will be potential buyers for any online business. Even if Internet marketing had reached market saturation, new blood would provide a new potential market every single day.

Like Internet marketing itself, the World Wide Web is still in it’s infancy – new technologies like audio & video are being developed all over the world. And as older phone company and cable company hardware systems are upgraded, these technologies will advance faster and faster, both in penetration and presentation.
Web 2.0 sites like YouTube, Google Video, FaceBook, MySpace and Squidoo provide easier access to additional users, and services like Technorati, Twitter, MyBlogLog & Pingoat make getting the word out much simpler. And the best of these tools, blogs, have made it easy for anyone to start Internet marketing.
Free blogging software like WordPress and free blog hosting sites like Blogger and WordPress have eliminated the need to invest financially in your startup – a major boost for people at risk from the recession. Using a blog to promote affiliate marketing opportunities removes all financial risk, something that can’t be done in the offline world.

I am often asked by business owners about online marketing. What many perceive is that online marketing is difficult to master in achieving results. What they fail to realise is that a generic message resonates with practically no one, while a focus targeting approach allows you to structure your message so that the recipient will elicit an emotive response of “that’s me”!

Effective online marketing requires that you are absolutely clear on your target market or potential customers. Running a mass online marketing campaign is ineffective if it is not targeted. Regardless of size and industry, every business requires an effective marketing strategy but many make the mistake of overlooking this essential aspect of business planning. A marketing strategy works by defining the objectives and goals of a firm’s marketing efforts, covering everything from demographics to budget management.
Creating a marketing strategy for the first time can be overwhelming and the prospect of doing something new and unfamiliar can lead to frustration and procrastination. However, by following a simple set of guidelines it is possible to create a marketing plan that when put into action can improve the profitability of your company and allow you to focus you efforts on other aspects of running your business.
First steps
The first hurdle that firms face when creating a marketing strategy is establishing where they are in the first instance. Before going on to plan future objectives it is important to make an assessment of the company’s current position on its marketing efforts and expenditure.
Establish current business output and market share
A range of things should be considered when making these first steps but the most significant factors will most likely by your firm’s current business output and market share within the relevant industry. By establishing these important aspects it is easier to set realistic yet challenging goals for your firm to aim for. This is a vitally important aspect of a marketing strategy as it provides a benchmark from which your firm may be assessed further down the line.
Establish desired business output and market share
With your current position already evaluated, you will want to set your business goals and objectives as to how you want to grow these factors. An example of these may be that you wish to expand business output or divert attention to slightly different section of market share. These objectives should be set to timescales to enable you to come back and evaluate how well you approached these aims.
Who are your customers?
In contrast to a business strategy, marketing strategy should be aimed not at production or product design but instead solely on whom you want to buy your product. For this reason, much of a marketing strategy should be based on information about who is buying your products and how they are interacting with your brand. These can be very simple datasets such as the age and gender of your current audience, to more advanced information, such as time of day they are most likely to buy.
Who do you want to be your customers and how will you reach them?
It is also important to establish a target demographic. In some cases this may be similar to your product or service’s current demographic, but you may also wish to try tailoring your marketing strategy with the intention of appealing to a new audience. In doing this you will wish to consider what the most appropriate forms of marketing for reaching your target demographic may be. These will vary from product to product but the use of digital platforms such as Facebook and Twitter should not be ignored. Each potential strategy should be analysed based on their relative cost and predicted effectiveness.
What are your overall aims and objectives?
Once you have established your target demographic and decided on an appropriate range of strategic approaches, you will need to create a list of goals and objectives. This is undoubtedly the most important aspect of any marketing strategy as it will dictate the direction of your firm’s entire marketing efforts. These objectives should all be quantifiable to some extent as it is important to keep track of progress. These objectives can include everything related to marketing, such as increases to sales, income or changes in staffing levels or acquiring larger premises.

Beware the Marketer who wants 100% payment upfront
It’s rare for any professional -whether it is a solicitor, a graphic designer or a car mechanic -to ask you for payment upfront in full. There is simply no reason why anyone should have to do this when they haven’t seen any work.
Many business owners who have not been through the process of hiring professional marketing advice before may be tricked by fakes into believing that upfront payment is commonplace. I am here to tell you that it is most definitely not and there is no reason a marketing consultant should ask you to pay 100% upfront. What’s more, you should never have to agree to sign a long-term contract or sign over copyright.
What are the implications of these things?
Signing contracts or paying 100% upfront, it means that you are locked in to their services and completely trapped.
Fake marketers who receive payment in full before doing the job have no motivation to see it out. They may put no effort into their strategy or even disappear before the job is complete.
Long-term contracts mean the marketer is relying on a legal obligations, rather than their skills, to keep you as a client.
Signing over copyright may not seem like a big deal now, but if you wish to sell or franchise in the future, copyright is crucial and you could risk losing a lot of time, money, and effort trying to work it out.
It’s simply not work the risk.
How do I handle a marketer who asks too much of me?
If any of these things come up in the initial meeting, I would suggest walking away. Payment will, of course, be discussed, but long-term contracts, pre-payment, and signing over of copyright are all alarm bells warning you of an untrustworthy marketer.
Beware of the bargain bin Marketing Consultant
Above, I discussed the danger of signing a long-term contract, signing over copyright or pre-paying in full. Now, in this, my last post in this series, I want to discuss the opposite – the marketer who uses bargain prices, rather than skills, to draw you in.
You get what you pay for when it comes to marketing. Creating a successful marketing plan, and on that is going to draw profits, takes time and energy. The competition needs to be analysed, industry research performed, communication should be constant, and a strategy should be created, reviewed, and finalised. Each of these steps is as important as the last, and for a marketer to create a strategy that is going to work for your business specifically they are going to need time and money.
How are Marketing Consultants paid?
Generally marketers are paid either a flat rate for a range of services agreed upon in the initial meetings or on an hourly rate.
Either way, there is no reason for specials to exist in marketing. Why would a marketer’s rate be marked down? If a marketing consultant is offering a bargain price, it is likely the strategy they offer you is one that is rehashed from an old plan. I cannot stress enough how vital it is to have a plan that caters to your business specifically and your target audience.
Don’t be tempted…
It is tempting to just go with a bargain bin marketer to cut costs, but so often businesses who do this wind up hiring another marketer down the track and essentially paying double what they would have otherwise.
In time, your marketing will pay for itself if it is successful. Hiring an excellent marketer who costs a little more could see you paying for your marketing ten times rather than just once.
Remember, pay peanuts, and get monkeys. Marketing is an area well worth investing in and a good plan can last you a long time.

It is very common for business owners to dismiss the internet. Many people still hold to the old beliefs in marketing, and are convinced that only ads on TV, the Yellow Pages, radio, or print media are valid ways of promoting their business. This couldn’t be further from the truth. What remains is for more business to realize the opportunities which will become available to them as soon as they consider the internet a valid way to market their services.
There are several ways to convince business owners that the internet is the most advantageous media for them to pursue in terms of their marketing. The first way to do this is by example. The next step in showing business owners why the internet is a valid means of marketing is actually being able to explain to them what kinds of services they should be paying for or receiving. The reason that many people fear advertising on the internet is because they don’t know exactly what types of services they should be pursuing, and what types of benefits they can expect to see from them. When a business owner starts to understand the value of social networking, social media, local business marketing and search engine optimization, they will start to see why they need to be marketing on the internet.
The final reason that local business owners should consider internet marketing is that the internet is how people find businesses these days. People no longer open up the yellow pages or flip open a newspaper to find a certain type of business. Instead, they pull out their cell phone, punch in a search term into Google, and see what businesses are suggested to them. This trend has been growing more and more over recent years, especially with the huge increases in the use of mobile web technology. The real truth of the matter is that, if a business doesn’t start consider online marketing, they won’t just find it difficult to grow their business, they could actually start to lose business as their competitors find ways to attract customers over the internet.
